Flu Season Is Here: It’s Not as Bad as Last Year

We meet again with influenza in the US. But we also have good news: it’s not as bad as it was last season. We must mention that almost 80,000 Americans died last season.

Last year was a bad year

Last year, in December, about 4.1% of the doctor visits that took place in the US happened because of flu illnesses. It’s a severe deal, and we had some hard hits. The hardest one so far happened in the south of the US, from South Carolina to New Mexico and even Utah. We’ve also seen it in New Jersey and New York. But the good news is that so far, the disease is at its lowest level.

This year, it won’t be so bad

However, let’s not forget that there are a few months left in the season and anything can happen. It’s too soon to know all the details. Influenza happens between December and February and it’s a very unpredictable situation. However, we have some positive hints that it won’t be as bad as it was, due to the fact that the season started slowly and it did not catch up as fast as last year.

This year we’re talking about H1N1, which is less likely to affect old people, which, as we know, is a very vulnerable group. It is more sensitive to vaccination. Last year, we dealt with H3N2 and we had severe cases. The records showed that the mortality was at its highest last year.

How did we handle it last year?

Hospitals made tents and triage units in parking lots, because the situation was so bad. In fact, it wasn’t the virus that was deadlier, but it circulated faster than normal, and that’s what led to the disaster.
