The Sobeys grocery chain will be cutting 800 office staff jobs across Canada.
Chief executive, Michael Medline says the cuts will only affect office staff and is an attempt to create one national organization out of five regional businesses.
“The first phase of our plan to transform our business, which has been focused on resetting the foundation of Sobeys and creating a new organization structure, is now substantially complete,” Medline said in a statement.
“The work to restructure the Company is fundamentally changing our operating model from a collection of five regional businesses to one, national organization….The creation of a smaller structure with fewer jobs has impacted our office employees only. The decisions that we have made to date will result in the departure of approximately 800 people from Sobeys offices across the country.”
